Wisdom Tooth Removal in Highton, Geelong
At My Dentist @ Highton, we assess wisdom teeth carefully and recommend treatment based on your condition and symptoms.
When Wisdom Teeth Start Causing Problems
A lot of people do not feel a thing when their wisdom teeth (molars) emerge, while others experience extensive pain, overcrowding, impaction, cyst formation or infection.
Most commonly, when an erupting molar doesn’t have enough room in the jaw, it pushes the tooth in front of it, or pushes the gum and causes pain.
Common complications from impacted wisdom teeth include:
- Decay between molars: a wisdom tooth growing sideways makes brushing and flossing difficult, therefore causing decay
- Gum infection: swelling and bacterial infection, due to difficulty cleaning the area
- Wisdom teeth growing towards the cheek causing trauma and swelling
Do All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
Infected molars can be treated with antibiotics; however, infection can reoccur. Moreover, an impacted tooth cannot contribute to chewing, and often causes gum infection. Therefore, it is better to remove the impacted tooth in cases like this.
However, not all wisdom teeth are required to be removed. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should always seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner or meet our team to enquire regarding your wisdom teeth’s current condition.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your dentist will assess your wisdom teeth and discuss your symptoms, oral health, and treatment options. Depending on your situation, we may recommend monitoring the tooth, managing infection, or arranging removal where appropriate. Our team will explain the condition of the tooth and help you understand the most suitable next step.
